i have a border which has a large privet hedge behind, help with suitable plants would be gratefully recieved.It gets the sun most of the afternoon.

I should think you could plant almost anything you like in your border, except grey-leaved plants which need full sun - it will still be getting plenty of light even if it doesn't get actually get the sun until the afternoon. The only sort of shade that's a big problem is deep shade from overhanging trees, which cut out the light as well as the sun. The privet will be taking a lot of water and nutrients out of the soil, so dig in plenty of humus before planting and water the plants regularly until they are established. And remember to leave a pathway between the plants and the hedge, so that the hedge can be trimmed!
