Hello,

I have a patch in my garden that, until about 6 months ago, used to have 4 rather large conifers. Since they were so large we have decided not to dig up the roots. However it looks so bare just having 4 stumps and want to find something to give quick ground cover. BUT the area is such that I cannot plant into the ground.

So, the question is, are there any suggestions for a vigorous plant that will cover quite quickly that I can plant in troughs and other containers? The area gets the sun after about 2pm until about 6pm and is quite sheltered.

I'll probably start with some kind of ivy but want a bit of variation.

THANK YOU!!

Golden hop (Humulus lupulus 'Aureus') is very fast-growing and vigorous. It's a climber, of course, but you can train it over the stumps and anywhere else you want it to go.

Many thanks Christine, will keep a look out for it!

I'll have those awful stumps covered in no time!
