Hopefully someone can help me by identifying what is digging up my lawn. I have started getting holes about 2 inches in diameter, 3 inches deep tapering down to nothing.
There is no spoil left from the hole.
There is no damage around the hole
They are all at an angle of about 45 degrees
Anybody got any ideas what could be digging them ?
Our best guess is a hedgehog, but we have never seen one in the garden

My friend told me this morning that he has seen similar holes in his lawn. He absently watched a couple of squirrels playing and when later he was mowing his lawn, he discovered that one of the holes contained a broken acorn shell?
Not conclusive but it gives room for possibilities no?
We are in Derbyshire

I think that the chances are it's squirrels digging holes in your lawn.
In autumn they nibble the growing tips of nuts and then bury the nuts around the place for a snack later in the season when food is scarce.
Some of the nuts are not found and gernimate the following season. This is how you get Oak & Wallnut seedlings appearing in the strangest places.
The other alternative are rabbits. They tend to leave little round deposits. I dount that this is the culprit in your case as you will have noticed them before.
Best wishes

I would agree with the others and say its probably squirrels though we also have a green woodpecker that does very similar things to our lawns here (Hampshire).
