I am so glad somebody else in the gardening scene is taking this idea into consideration--this is my favorite natural fertilizer to use in my family's vegetable garden. There is never a shortage of feces to use, and it's all free.
I make sure it's dark when we fertilize--plants like warm excrement best, so my entire family participates in this activity. It is quite bonding to work together in fertilizing the food that will go on our dinner plates in only a short time.
What we do, is each of us holds our feces in during the day as often as possible then go out at night (so our neighbors don't see, I really would not expect them to understand as this is a fairly novel method) and simply squat over the plants that need the most fertilizer. Tomatoes and melons like it best.
The things you should watch out for most are feces getting directly on the vegetables and fruits themselves, and the amount of urine dispursed on the garden--it is possible to cause fertilizer burn if too much urine is in the soil, although small amounts go a long way in balancing pH levels.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them.

ok a few q's.

what types of plants do you have in your garden?

does it smell bad when you use it?

how well does it work compared to other methods?

Our family grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in our garden in order to stock our freezer and table with plenty of delicious, nutricious vitamin-rich natural food as possible throughout the summer and fall seasons.
Our staple fruits are watermelon, canteloupe, tomato, and strawberries. Those are the fruits that we've found to thrive the most with the system we've devised.
Our favorite veggies to grow are cucumbers, squash, spinach, and cabbage (you do NOT want your youngest children fertilizing these as it's quite a pain washing the excrement out of these tasties).
The smell really isn't an issue for us--this depends of course on the diet of your family. I raise our family on a strict macrobiotic diet so it tends to smell pretty bad, but this also provides the best nutrients for our plants. If you eat the average American diet of meat and cheese you should not have too strong an odor. Our English friends on this forum tend to consume a more balanced diet and will be on the more oderific side of things as well but it should not be very bad unless you are vegetarian or macrobiotic.
Our neighbors have asked about the smell several times, as well as relatives over for barbecues--we just tell them it's sheep manure. This is usually exotic enough to quell their curiosity.
How well does it work? Let me tell you, once you have your family crapping in your garden every night for one garden season, you will never go back to more conventional methods of fertilization. Our fecal matter provides an extremely varied range of nutrients and minerals that plants love. This is true regardless of your fertilizer crew's diet. You should remember to work some feces into the soil before planting also for best results.

thx. what does macrobiotic mean btw?

Macrobiotic is a diet involving only eating natural vegetarian foods and fish. We only eat brown rice, whole-grain breads, and use unrefined sugar.
Of course, this cuts out most options for eating out unless you live in California, but the extra effort is well worth it for the health of your family.
If you find your children becoming pale or getting sick a lot, no need to worry, this is only their bodies' way of flushing out all the toxins from their old diet.

are you sure it's perfectly okay with the children? that sounds odd.

Oh yes, it's quite fine.
Doctors may not approve of the diet but they have really only had a meager amount of training in the area of nutrition, which discredits them. I, on the other hand, have spent many hours poring over macrobiotic diet websites on geocities and the like and have built a strong knowledge of proper nutrition.
Americans just love those leathery tans and love handles, and let me tell you it's just not healthy in the long run.
We need to bond together and teach our children how to live healthfully for the new generation.

Stop being so cynical! There is plenty of reliable information on the internet just waiting to be found.
You just have to look for it.
Now stop picking and start clicking!!

who authored the articles in question?

naturalgarden

Dr. Ahmad Rashad Rasheed, B.BS and Dr. Janet Nocasoiweski.
Why would you ask such a silly question?
I want to know something.
What is your experience in organic flower gardening?

isn't it only natural to want to know the author of something?

aren't we talking about fruits and vegetables, not flowers?

naturalgarden

Listen buster. I can talk about anything I want. You are totally missing the point.
BTW, pooping in your veggie garden can give you and your family E. COLI infection--which is very serious--unless your entire family is vaccinated against it. But it's well worth it for the plump delicious, almost genetically-engineered-good fruits and vegs.

tell me more about e. coli?

naturalgarden
February 2nd, 2004, 03:17 AM
E. coli is a very popular bacteria that manifests itself via feces from humans' bodies mainly.
It can cause very serious illness if you consume something with the bacteria--it can even kill you if you are a senior citizen, in very poor health, or are macrobiotic. You do not want to mess with this--so please do not endeavor to fertilize your garden in this manner without vaccinating everyone who will consume the fruits of your labors.

This is a most excellent thread, something I have thought about in the past myself and reading has out a smile on my face.

My mother always recommended that I urinated around her young Myrtle trees and roses when I last lived with her in Cornwall. She reckons the like it!

Not sure my wife would approve of me pooping in our small terraced house garden in full view of the neighbours though!

I'm glad you got a kick out of it..

Anyway, to really become savage enough to get to the point that you will poop in your garden in front of neighbors, I recommend moving to any major American city, the American flag bumper stickers and general beastliness of our general populace will git you invulgarated and ready to do some organic gardening at an All-American barbecue in suburbia!!

However, as I stated before, the macrobiotic diet does it best :)

Well you could poop in a potty then through it out the window into your garden (or the All-American barbecue in suburbia next door if you feel that way inclined).
