Can you identify this Trillium?
This Trillium has green Flowers. Flowering in May.
How are you sure you have the correct variety?

Hi Neil,
I think what you have here is a flower without the petals and a seed starting to form, it should have three petals in white or red I think probably white and it is called Trillium Grandiflorum ( Wake-robin ) but don't take this as being right as it may come out red when it flowers. I do know it likes shade and an acid soil and it's also called the Wood Lily.

Dear Summer House,
I was confused by the colour of this trillium. I did not realise it was because there weren't any petals.
I thought that the green version looked very attractive, so this Trillium has gone even futher up my list of plants I like.
I did photograph a Trillium with red petals so this might be it.
Thank you.
Very informative.
I'll be putting more plants on here for you and others.
Do you have one of our interactive CD's? If not I'd be delighted to send you a copy for free.
Best wishes
Neil

Paul Williams has identified this plant as:-
Paris quadrifolia. The leaves are quite distinct but the flowers do look very similar to a Trillium without petals.
Thanks Paul

Hi Neil,
I have just read your reply and have looked Paris Quadrifolia up on the net and found it at http://www.plant-identification.co.uk/skye/liliaceae/paris-quadrifolia.htm have a look for yourself and see if you think it's the same plant I'm not to sure. Let me know what you decide.

Hi Neil,
I am trying to attach three pictures of Paris Quadrifolia taken from the web, but I only seem to be able to attach one so three replies will be necessary.

I see what you mean.
The leaves in your photos are very different to mine.
The pussle continues.
Thank you for the Plant Idenfication web site. I'll have a look.
Best wishes

Hi Neil,
Me again I think we are getting nearer, the last picture you put on the site had 4 & 5 leaves and as far as I know Trillium's have everything in 3's petals, leaves the lot, so what I think you have here is Cornus Candensis (Creeping Dogwood) or something very closely related, see what you think.

This is great. Another plant that looks very similar.
The leaves do look very similar but I think that the flower looks very similar to the DK Wild Flowers of Britain and they say its Paris quadrifolia.
Do you know if there is a Cornus canadensis which has a similar flower. I do not know what Cornus plants look like when the petals fall and set seed.
The mystery continues. Great stuff.
Best wishes

It looks like Paris polyphylla or our native P. quadrifolia, certainly not Trillium. Look at Crug web site for photos - http://www.crug-farm.co.uk/ plant database. Where did you get the plant from as P. polyphylla is around in the trade from specialist nurseries.
