Can you identify this Paeonia?
How are you so sure?

Hi Neil,
I am not quite sure but it probably is P. 'L' Esperance' It has very large, single, primrose-yellow flowers with a carmine ( Vivid Red ) blotch at the base of each petal, the blotch should identify it if you check when it is out.
My information comes from The Royal Horticultural Society, Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers a very good book but the picture is only 1"X1", not very big but a good match all the same.

Dear Summer House,

Thank you for your ID.
I find most books are restrictive with their photos. The costs and space involved restricts them and is one reason why I brought a team together to create a British made interactive CD. We can have numberous photos per plant.
This is because the colour of a plant changes depending on if the photograph was taken in full sun or shade.
Rosa Paul's Scarlet for example has 14 photographs. I had so many as I wanted to show how the branches can be bent over to form a dome.

I have also found with some books the plants have been incorrectly identified. It is very easily done.
The Publishers expect the photographer to correctly identify the plants. The photographer expects the plants to be correctly labelled. It is too easy for mistakes to appear and is why I'm attempting to create a definitive interactive plant reference CD-ROM. This will be useful to many people.
A large project I know but we're making good progress.
I really appreciate your help. I will send your suggestions to our Authors and between us I hope we can continue to correctly identify the plants.
Best wishes
