I was given this plant as a gift, but have been unable to find out what it is. Can you help?

The plant you have got as a present is a Tillandsia.

Yours is T.lindenii. (Blue-flowered torch).

The blue flower or flowers will emerge from the green bract (the green leaf like thing in your picture) which is borne just above the spikey leaves.
