I posted a photo (What is this Leafy Plant?) on 1st September but no luck. However, somebody locally suggested it was a "begalia" about which I can find nothing in my RHS gardening encyclopaedia. There are a couple of references on the internet but no pictures or any description. Can anyone help with a description/photo of a begalia? Thanks.

I had a look at your pic, Rhodo, and am wondering if they meant 'Bergenia'.
I can't think that I've heard of a Begalia and from the pic and description they could well be some sort of Bergenia.

Thanks Miranda, I think you've cracked it. A bit of further net research and photos undertaken and I'm sure they are bergenias. Apparently they flower in spring but to be honest these were growing in an obscure spot in the garden and I haven't paid any attention to them until a few weeks ago when I transferred some of them for ground cover. That's one mystery solved, I've another couple coming up - hope you can stick around! (I think I just misheard when someone said begalia).
Thanks again.
