What is this?

It looks to me like Solanum crispum. Do an image search in google or something and see if it is. Never grown it myself, but I think it's fairly undemanding.

:o Thanks, Miranda. I am sorry I did not thank you earlier! I did actually find it in a garden centre in the end, but there are still planty of mysteries in our garden, so I will be asking again, hopefully armed with some better pictures!

I have one and they're lovely. The one tip I was given is to cut them right back (meaning 2 -3 ft) in Spring or you get all the flowers at the top, and it works for me.
