I kept getting (last year) a circle in my lawn where grass dies. If re seeded this dies off.
I dug it out deep and found what looked like blue soil. After removing this new grass was ok. But looking at it it now it seems to be starting again, out side of the original area.

Hi John
I think that at sometime there has been oil spilt on the ground where the grass is dead this will lie in the ground for years. The only way to remove it is to dig it out and replace with some good soil.
This often happens when someone in the past has had a shed or garage in a garden with motorbikes or a car and every oil change the oil was thrown out round the back of the shed.
I hope this will help

Do you think it's worse if the motorbikes were stolen?

Bitch,
Chris Beardshaw mentioned that bitches (female dogs) peeing on the lawn can cause circular patches of dead grass. The pH of the urine kills the grass. Chris suggested putting some tomato ketchup in their evening food will help neutralise the pH in the urine and stop it from killing your grass.

To Answer your question,
Only if the Gear (oil) was handed to a Fence who Posted it to the garden for Safe keeping and to stop getting Grassed On.

Actually, this year's seeding attempt has so far gone quite well.
Started some time ago and kept it under fleece until a couple of days ago to protect from frost and birds whilst allowing rain through.
Now I just have to nurse it through the hose pipe ban...

Live further north it's colder but there's plenty of water.

Have since been told this is the so called 'fairy circle', fungus. How do I get rid? By digging it up?
