I'm really impressed with my Stewart 'Heat & Grow' Electric Propagator (Model 2394005) as the Asters germinated in 24hrs and now the Jacaranda seeds are sprouting after only a week. We seems to have seedlings all over the place - in the greenhouse, on the kitchen windowsill and in the propagator. Brill.:D

Hmm, I must be more careful with the watering of the seedlings. The Jacaranda seedlings which measure about 1 1/2" high are keeling over at a rate now and shrivelling up. I still have about four or five left which look fine and wonder if this is 'damping off'. They are now out of the propogator and on the kitchen window sill. I think I'll back off the watering and see how the remainder get on.
I read something the other day about avoiding the use of water from a water butt on seedlings as the water might be infected. Never heard that one before.

That's not good news Paul, I water all my seedlings from the water butt.

It does sound like 'damping off' Paul, if it's any consolation it has happened to my cauliflower seedlings this year too, and it's the first time ever for me. None of my seeds or seedlings have as yet seen tap water as I am using the water from the butts.

At last night's horticultural society meeting, the speaker mentioned the problems of damping off and recommended Cheshunt Compound. I've now looked this up and it seems this copper based fungicide is the solution.
(Yes it is 0237am, can't sleep as we're off on the Eurostar in - yawn - a couple of hours).

Get off of it Paul Youve been at the computer games.
It took me eight months to conquer the ancient Roman world last year. Youve got to be disciplined and set your self a time limit Paul. Make 04.Am your very latest Paul. :D

No really, we are both really poor sleepers so we often get up in the middle of the night to make cups of tea and/or come on here. In fact in our Ibis room in Brussels, without our usual heavy duvet, we hardly slept a wink for three nights. It was a relief to get back home yesterday although our house becomes a fridge when left unoccupied for a few days.

Hi Paul, glad to hear your heated propagator is working fine, I always use water that has been standing in the greenhouse so it has that cold chill taken away and also I always add a little 'potassium permanganate' which causes the water to take on a pinkish appearance this keeps the algae at bay.
