So i'm obsessed.

Moved in to a house with dirt for a lwn three years ago where the garden is surrounded by beeeeeeeeeeeeech trees.

If I sow in spring it doesn't survive the hard sun and dry earth. If I sow in autumn it doesn't survive the shade and frost.

The wife has done great on the flower bed front, but these lovely things should be set off my a nice lush lawn in my view.

This autumn's grass crop is looking good.

The question: should I leave the moss to protect it from the frost or kill it to allow the young grass to grow?

Funny stuff grass. First of all while the weather is as wet as it is in some parts of Britian, assuming you are in Britain and in a wet bit, stay off the grass as much as possible. If you can get on it, then the first thing to do is to roll it if you can. If your lawn mower has a roller on it rather than one of these hover ones then just gently push the roller over the lawn. This pushes the stuff into the soil and also breaks first leaf causing the plant to grow more and so you get a thicker and better covering. If the weather continues mild and dry, then you could give a light cut, all you want to do is take the top half of the growth off, no more. I would not do anything then until spring.
