If you are wanting to grow brassicas for use in August now is the time to begin sowing them. Red cabbage takes a little longer than white so should be sown immediately, It's way too cold for sowing outside, but sow brassica seeds in afine seed compost in an unheated cold frame/greenhouse and just keep a check on the watering. At the allotment you can cover the ground with polythene if you have not already done so this will get the ground warmed up ready for transplanting the brassicas.
