Does anyone know of an effective way of deterring cats from digging up the garden and leaving their deposits?
I've tried preparitory crystals, berberis clippings and holly twigs, but the cats don't seem to notice.
I'm told that cats never mess on their own gardens and won't let other cats do so either. So it looks like the best solution would be to get a cat of our own. Any other suggestions?

I think cats will mess on their own gardens, you could get a dog but that doesn't always work my dog richard chases cats but sometimes he goes "thundering" through the borders making a right mess. There is a product available called "silent roar" available from a company called LBS garden warehouse if you google it ,it should come up. The product is lion dung in pellet form and it is alledged that when a domestic cat smells the lion poo it runs off quickly, i don't know if it works or not, We have three neighbourhood cats that like to visit our garden at home, usually clapping our hands seems to shoo them off.

We do the same as digger and clap our hands at the cats. They soon get the idea that we're not keen on having them there. When Toby was about, he would also thunder after them through the beds but, since both he and the cats tended to take the same route, they eventually made themselves a convenient path.
I also tried Berberis and Pyracantha prunings over my vegetable bed and found that if they are laid thickly, the cats stay away.
