I have just bought a rose named Duchesse de Montebello. In the tub along with the rose is a plant which I can only say looks like a vegetable. Is this planted along side for a reason?

Can you give us more information or a picture?

Containerised roses will contain just the rose and compost. Anything else is a stray. I'd remove it and pot it in another pot. Wait for it to flower to see what you have; you may be pleasantly surprised. I've lots of foxglove seedlings sprouting in pots around the garden which I'll plant out in the border.
