I planted a 'Katy' apple tree last winter and have been delighted with the blossom and apples (though the squirrels stole every single one). I'm now wondering about pruning. It looks pretty small and I want it to grow and bush out so I'm not sure about pruning. What is a lateral and how do you go about pruning them. I have tiny little side shoots that are too small to prune.
