I bought a water melon plant and a gala melon plant from B&Q a few months back. I have planted them in two separate tyres (some thing I found on the website that I have now lost) in a green house with a string for them to climb.
Their on a water irrigation system at the moment and get watered twice a day for ten minuets. There both about 4 foot tall now and they are starting to flower. What should I do now???? Where do they fruit from?
Yours hopefully a truly novice gardener

Do what the very old boys did and that's to use a sable brush and do the bees work for them. I've grown melons myself and you might want to put horizontal strings or steel wire as mine got to a spread of about 18 feet across! A lot of flowers will drop off at first but don't give up. When the fruit is at the start of its growth get something like a pair of tights and make a cradle for the fruit as the plant will find it impossible to sustain that weight if the fruit gets like the size of those in the shops!
Researching on the 'Net I'd found that in Texas, melons are usually grow along the ground so they have no weight issues with their plants.

Sorry, forgot that I forgot to state that if pollination is succesful, the fruit is borne just behind the petals, which will fall off.
Good luck and don't forget to share!
Richard.
