How can I rid my lawn of ants ? I have tried powder and lawn weedkiller to
no avail. They produce mounds of soil which if not swept away prevent grass
growing and leave unsightly bare patches.

Other than digging up the lawn and pouring boiling water into the nests, there isn't a lot you can do, unless you're willing to use stronger chemicals.

One thing to consider is that if your lawn makes a comfortable home for ants then, even if you kill them all this year, it will make space for another queen to set up a nest. Like many creatures, ants are opportunists and if they find a good spot, they'll live there.

If it was me, I'd stick to brushing the soil to spread it out so you avoid the bare patches. You could also re-seed any bare patches now.
