Poppies

Is it ok to cut poppies back to ground level after they have flowered? Although the heads are lovely the stems are beginning to weaken and split as they are 4-5ft tall.

In short yes you can cut the poppies down after flowering are they oriental? sometimes they can be cut back straight after flowering to produce a second "flush" of flowers, but if i may say it's a tad late to expect a second flush, but you will do no harm if you cut off the flower stems and leave some foliage for a bit of winter protection, could i ask where your are located?
