Dratted flies

Anyone know how to deter these pesky flies that land on you when you are quietly weeding?
Someone suggested vinegar on your arms and face but then I feel like a chip!

I use a citronella roll on scent from wilkos you need to keep putting it on but it does work and smells better than vinegar but i think the vinegar that does the trick is cider vinegar which also works well.
